A devoted housewife and mother, Barbara Parker (Patty Duke), discovers that her husband, Art (Art Hindle), has made their daughter the sole beneficiary of his life insurance. After Barbara files for divorce, a misogynistic judge awards Art almost all of their shared assets, giving Barbara only a fraction of their marital estate.
Refusing to accept the biased ruling, Barbara enrolls in law school to represent herself and appeal the unfair divorce settlement. Throughout her legal fight, she receives support from a kind lawyer, Gene (Donnelly Rhodes).
