The rise of a tennis star: Nicknamed "Little Mo," Connolly was a force in women's tennis in the early 1950s. The film covers her development as a player, from her childhood training under coach Eleanor "Teach" Tennant (Michael Learned) to her dominance of the professional tour.
Grand Slam victory: At just 18 years old in 1953, Connolly achieved the monumental feat of winning all four major tennis tournaments in a single calendar year—the Australian Championships, the French Championships, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Championships.
A tragic end: In July 1954, at age 19, Connolly's career was cut short by a horseback riding accident that severely injured her right leg. The film covers her subsequent retirement from the sport, marriage to Norman Brinker (Mark Harmon), and her diagnosis and eventual death from cancer in 1969 at the age of 34.
