We Are the Children is a 1987 ABC television movie starring Ted Danson, Ally Sheedy, and Judith Ivey. Filmed on location in Kenya, it centers on the devastating famine in Ethiopia in 1984.
Plot summary
The film follows two Americans who meet while reporting on the famine:
- Ted Danson plays Duffy Lynch, a cynical photojournalist who has become jaded by the world's tragedies.
- Ally Sheedy plays Annie Keats, an idealistic young doctor who volunteers to help in a small village and believes she can make a difference.
- Judith Ivey plays a Catholic nun who helps run a village haven for refugees, trying to supply food and hope to the inhabitants.
As the characters navigate the humanitarian crisis, Lynch and Keats fall in love and see their differing worldviews challenged and changed by the circumstances.
