Molly McKinley (Lindsay Wagner), a former nun turned rape crisis counselor, works at a small, underfunded center. Her life is upended when she meets Sophie DiMatteo (Holly Marie Combs), a 16-year-old girl who was brutally raped by Tommy Bickley, the son of a wealthy and powerful family.
Molly convinces the initially hesitant Sophie to press charges, and the district attorney takes the case. However, the defense's strategy is to discredit Sophie by bringing her past into question. They learn that Sophie has been dishonest about certain aspects of her life, and they subpoena Molly's confidential client file, which contains details about Sophie's past promiscuity.
Believing that releasing the file would not only betray Sophie's trust but also compromise the case, Molly refuses to comply with the court order. Her defiance leads to her being sent to jail for contempt of court.
The situation forces Sophie to confront her own shame and guilt. She faces a choice: remain silent and keep Molly imprisoned, or speak up and risk her past being used against her in court. The film explores the difficult themes of victim-blaming and the right of confidentiality for sexual assault victims.
