The plot centers on Linda Ray Guettner (played by Gena Rowlands), a divorced waitress who enters into a lesbian relationship. Her ex-husband, upon learning of her relationship, initiates a custody battle for their children. The film is based on the true story of Mary Jo Risher's fight to retain custody of her children. The movie was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Film.
