The miniseries depicts the breakdown of Tom and Susie Leary's marriage and their subsequent custody dispute over their sons. Susie moves back with her parents and begins a relationship with her cousin, Fritz, a survivalist who claims to be a medical student and CIA agent.

As the custody battle escalates, Susie blames Tom's mother, and Fritz tells Susie that Tom is connected to the mafia.

Tragedy strikes when Tom's mother and sister are murdered. Tom suspects Susie and Fritz, and later, when Susie's parents and grandmother are killed, he shares his suspicions with the police.

Police apprehend Fritz's accomplice who provides a confession. Susie and Fritz attempt to escape with the children but are caught after a chase and shootout. The story ends with a bomb in Fritz's car detonating, killing everyone inside.
