Brian Dennehy played serial killer John Wayne Gacy in the 1992 television miniseries To Catch a Killer. The film follows the true-crime story of the police hunt for Gacy, a respected businessman and community figure who was convicted of killing 33 young men and boys in the Chicago area. Dennehy's performance was critically acclaimed and earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor. 


Plot

  • The investigation: The story is told from two perspectives: the police's pursuit and Gacy's own movements. After a 15-year-old boy, Christopher Gant (based on real-life victim Robert Piest), goes missing, Des Plaines, IL, detective Lieutenant Joe Kozenczak (Michael Riley) becomes convinced that Gacy is responsible.
  • A "cat-and-mouse" game: With little evidence and pushback from his superiors, Kozenczak and his team must outmaneuver Gacy, who begins a sadistic game of psychological manipulation.
  • A shocking discovery: After obtaining a search warrant, the police find incriminating evidence at Gacy's home. A second warrant leads to the horrific discovery of numerous bodies buried in the crawlspace beneath the house.
  • Conviction: The film concludes with Gacy's conviction for 33 murders and his sentencing to death. The investigation's tactics are revealed to have become a model for law enforcement in dealing with serial killer cases.
