The Bundy family of Rockport, Massachusetts, tries to celebrate a normal Christmas, but the war complicates their lives.
- Mike, the eldest son, returns home from combat in Europe to his pregnant wife, Nora.
- Terrel, the younger brother, is caught between finishing boot camp and an overseas deployment.
- Leah, the daughter, is on her way home, still mourning the death of her fiancé. She meets a soldier named Aaron Copler on the bus and invites him to spend the holidays with her family.
- The family's holiday plans are tragically disrupted when a telegram arrives on Christmas Eve, announcing that Mike has been killed in a plane crash.
- The story navigates the family's grief and heartbreak alongside the joy of Christmas, especially when Nora gives birth to a baby boy.
