Plot summary
Mary and Jack Brown (Patty Duke and Martin Sheen) are a small-town couple whose Marine son, Chris (Jason London), returns home married to Dusty (Alexandra Powers), an older and manipulative woman. Mary disapproves of the marriage, but her son ignores her warnings. Shortly after, Chris is found dead.
Mary suspects Dusty is responsible for Chris's murder and is determined to see her brought to justice. The plot follows Mary's relentless, multi-year campaign to expose Dusty's involvement in her son's death and to win custody of her granddaughter, Christine. Her pursuit is further complicated by Dusty's neglect of the child and attempts to collect her dead husband's army pension. The story includes a kidnapping plot, multiple custody battles, and a lengthy legal process as Mary seeks a final conviction.
