Set in the Canadian wilderness of the 1870s, the film follows a six-year-old farm boy named Benjy MacDonald. He is introverted and prefers the company of animals over humans, much to his family's concern.
During his solitary rambles, Benjy befriends a female badger. When he is caught in a strong river current and swept away from home, he is presumed lost. He survives by living in a cave and is protected and fed by his badger friend. After his family's week-long search, Benjy is finally found and returned home.
