The Best Little Girl in the World (1981) is a television film about a teenage girl, Casey Powell (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who develops anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder characterized by intentionally starving oneself or inducing vomiting.

Synopsis:

The film follows Casey as she secretly struggles with her anorexia, driven by family stress and social pressures. Her parents, played by Charles Durning and Eva Marie Saint, initially struggle to understand and cope with their daughter's illness. As her condition worsens, they eventually send her to a hospital, where she befriends another patient who encourages her to hide her illness. The movie portrays the challenges of anorexia and its impact on the individual and their family.

Key Points:

  • Pioneering TV film: It was the first made-for-TV movie to address anorexia nervosa.
  • Jennifer Jason Leigh's notable performance: She received praise for her portrayal of Casey, and lost weight under medical supervision for the role.
  • Concerns about the film's impact: While praised for raising awareness, the film has also been criticized for potentially glamorizing anorexia and oversimplifying the complexities of the disorder.
  • Based on a novel: The film is based on the 1979 novel of the same name by Steven Levenkron.

Casey Powell is a young teenage girl who is secretly suffering from anorexia nervosa, a mental and physical illness of deliberately starving herself or self-induced vomiting, because of her troubled home life and problems at school in which her bickering parents must put aside their differences to help her recover before her condition kills her.
