The Law is a 1974 Universal Television made-for-TV film starring Judd Hirsch as defense attorney Murray Stone. The film is a legal drama focused on a sensational murder trial in a big city.
Plot summary
- A dedicated public defender: Judd Hirsch's character, Murray Stone, is an overworked but ethical public defender who is convinced that his newest client is innocent.
- The client: The case involves a "dimwitted farmboy" (Gary Busey) who is accused of torturing and murdering a well-known football star.
- A morally ambiguous case: As Stone investigates, he discovers that the "squeaky-clean" football star was actually a man of dubious morals. Meanwhile, the legal system proves to be rife with manipulation and corruption, with people more interested in political gain and publicity than justice.
- The conflict: A flashy, publicity-seeking franchise lawyer gets involved in the case and tries to get Stone's client to plead guilty to secure a book deal. Stone must fight against both the system and the competing lawyer to prove his client's innocence.
