The film focuses on the tense family dynamic between a young sailor, Pete Devlin, and his emotionally distant, hard-drinking father, Billy Devlin.
- A troubled homecoming: Pete (played by Gary Frank) arrives home on a three-day leave and is confronted by a series of disappointments. He discovers his girlfriend has moved on, and his disabled father, Billy (Glenn Ford), is as emotionally withdrawn as ever.
- The bitter father: Billy lost his leg in an accident and has used alcohol to cope with his bitterness ever since. His son's attempts to connect with him are met with stony silence and resistance.
- A buried secret: With the help of his sympathetic mother, Anne (Julie Harris), Pete gradually learns the full story behind his father's injury and his subsequent emotional withdrawal.
- Pete's younger brother: Kevin Bacon plays Teddy, Pete's younger and more impulsive brother. Early in his career, Bacon portrayed Teddy as "a younger and stupider son" who rashly buys a gun after Pete's relationship troubles.

The Gift was a Christmas 1979 TV-movie offering based on the semi-autobiographical book written in 1973 by Pete Hammill. Gary Frank plays the Hammill counterpart, a Brooklyn-born sailor about to be shipped off to the Korean War. Frank decides to use his 3-day pass to discover if his girl friend really loves him, if he can communicate at last with his troublesome parents, and if he can get his own life together before being sent into battle. Julie Harris plays Frank's mother, while Glenn Ford portrays Frank's pugnacious, one-legged Irish dad.
