The film is a drama based on a true story. It tells the story of Jesse Maloney (Lee Remick), a nurse in a small, isolated California town in Death Valley. Since there is no full-time doctor in the town, Jesse steps in to provide medical care, delivering babies and setting bones, and generally serving the community for nearly a decade. However, she is a "Practical Nurse" and is arrested for practicing medicine without a license.
The movie follows Jesse's decision to fight the charges in court, despite the overwhelming odds, with the support of the entire town. Scott Wilson plays Sam Maloney, Jesse's husband, and Richard Marcus plays Ray Butler. The film highlights the conflict between the need for medical care in a remote community and the legal requirements of medical practice. The movie was directed by Glenn Jordan and written by James Lee Barrett.
The film is based on the true story of Patricia Coda, a nurse whose trial for practicing medicine without a license took place in Independence, California in 1965. The film was shot in Arizona. "Jesse" premiered on CBS on October 4, 1988.
In Meredith, California (a very small town) there was no doctor (only once a week on Wednesdays would a doctor fly in) , so Jesse Maloney (a "Practical Nurse") would take his place for the rest of the week. She would deliver the babies, set the bones and saved the lives of Meredith for nearly a decade. Then one day (in this "true story"), someone called the authorities and she gets arrested for practicing medicine without a license. With the strength of her convictions and overwhelming odds , she decides to fight her case in court, and has the support of the entire town.
