Obsessed, a 1992 TV movie starring Shannen Doherty, William Devane, and Clare Carey, is a psychological drama about a young woman who becomes dangerously obsessed with a much older, twice-divorced man.
Plot summary
- Lorie Brindel (Shannen Doherty) is a marine surveyor with a fascination for older men. She begins an affair with one of her clients, Ed Bledsoe (William Devane), a man old enough to be her father.
- The relationship quickly turns toxic, with Lorie demanding more of Ed's time and becoming controlling. After a few weeks of passion, she becomes convinced they will get married, but Ed, a golf fanatic who has been married twice before, is not interested in that level of commitment.
- When Ed tries to break up with her, Lorie refuses to accept it. Her emotional state unravels, swinging from extreme love to intense hatred.
- In her rage, Lorie takes destructive actions, including blowing up Ed's boat. When he reports her to the police, they can't do anything without proof.
- Lorie is eventually fired from her job, which she blames on Ed. The situation escalates when she holds Ed's daughter, Andie (Clare Carey), hostage at his house. Lorie reveals to Andie that her obsession stems from feeling neglected by her own father, leading her to seek older men.
- The climax occurs when Ed arrives and attempts to save his daughter. After Lorie threatens Andie, Ed fights her off. Lorie is later committed to a mental hospital.
- In the final scene, a year later, Ed is on his new yacht with a new girlfriend when he sees a passing yacht carrying Lorie with another wealthy, older man, indicating she has not truly changed.
