In the 1976 Western epic The Macahans (the pilot for the series How the West Was Won), James Arness stars as Zeb Macahan, a rugged mountain man who returns to Virginia to lead his brother’s family to the Oregon Territory.
As the Civil War breaks out, the journey is fractured: his brother, Timothy (Richard Kiley), returns east to fight, leaving Kate (Eva Marie Saint) and their children—including the eldest son, Seth (Bruce Boxleitner)—to brave the perilous frontier. Facing hostile territory and outlaws, the family must rely on Zeb’s survival skills to reach their new home.
