"The Last Convertible" is a 1979 American television mini-series adaptation of Anton Myrer's sprawling 1978 novel. The story is a coming-of-age drama set against the backdrop of World War II, focusing on five Harvard roommates of the class of '44. The mini-series aired in three parts, each approximately two hours long, starting on September 24, 1979.
Plot
The narrative begins in 1940 with the five Harvard friends – Russ Currier (Perry King), George Virdon (Bruce Boxleitner), Ron Dalrymple (Edward Albert), Terry Garrigan (John Shea), and Jean Roger des Barres (Michael Nouri) – forming a close bond. As World War II intensifies, the war impacts each of them in different ways. A central element of the story is a green 1939 Packard convertible, dubbed "The Empress", which symbolizes their youth and carefree pre-war days.
