The film follows Ethel (Mare Winningham) and James "Jim" Lee (Keith Carradine), a blind couple in the South. After being married, they discover Ethel cannot have children and decide to adopt. However, they run into a major roadblock when the state adoption agency refuses to allow them to adopt due to their blindness
