The Return of Marcus Welby, M.D. is a television movie that aired on May 16, 1984, featuring Robert Young reprising his iconic role as Dr. Marcus Welby from the popular 1969-76 series. Elena Verdugo also returned as Nurse Consuelo Lopez. James Brolin, who played Dr. Stephen Kiley in the original series, was unable to participate due to commitments to another show, but Dr. Kiley is mentioned and his character's support is featured in a key scene.
The movie's plot centered around Dr. Welby facing age discrimination, as the hospital he is associated with attempts to force him into retirement to make way for younger physicians. The film also served as a backdoor pilot for a potential new series featuring a father and son doctor team, played by Darren McGavin and Morgan Stevens, with Welby as a supporting character. However, this proposed series was not picked up.
Alexander Singer directed the film. Filming primarily took place in Santa Clarita, California.
