Law of the Land is a 1976 Western television movie starring Jim Davis, Don Johnson, and Cal Bellini. The story is a "whodunit" about a frontier sheriff and his young deputies searching for a serial killer who is murdering prostitutes. The film, which was reportedly a failed pilot for a television series, features an ensemble cast and several subplots.

Plot synopsis

The movie is set in the American Old West and focuses on Sheriff Pat Lambrose, played by Jim Davis, as he investigates a string of murders targeting prostitutes.

  • As the investigation unfolds, the sheriff is assisted by a group of younger deputies, including Quirt (Don Johnson), a drifting cowboy who joins the force, and Tom Condor (Cal Bellini), a half-Native American lawman.
  • The deputies work to protect other women in the community while tracking down the killer. One of the potential victims is Jane Adams (Barbara Parkins), a prostitute whose friend was murdered.
  • The plot includes multiple subplots and characters, such as a wannabe deputy (Charles Martin Smith) and a cavalry officer who was in love with one of the victims.
  • The story explores themes of prejudice and social standing in the Western town, as the community's judgment of the victims hinders the investigation.
